Had an episode with a-fib though I was in no immediate danger, learned that oftentimes folks go for decades without knowing they have a-fib. <boggle> Cardio doc put me on rythmol to keep a-fib from recurring. He also reduced Coreg by 50%. Got my broken tooth fixed. Had my first-ever colonoscopy which yieled no polyps and 2 small diverticula that show no signs of problems. Had neck swelling investigated via biopsy & iodine ct. Both came out negative and the ct clearly showed the swelling to be a salivary gland. That's an acceptable close to 2011 in my book! :) <flex> hehe  less

It also has cool info about health, fitness and exercise. I highly recommend it! My brain's post-stroke cognitive issues have kept me reading it very slowly & laboriously (as opposed to me pre-stroke brain that had no problems with math/scientific/technical learning at all - everything was pretty easy to learn) so I'm still in the 3rd chapter. My trainer is who recommended it to me & I'm glad she did. It's difficult for me but a great brain workout!  less

Thanks KS! :) Actually I haven't been involved with PT since August 2009, when my benefit ran out. This is pure strength training, much more intense than even the toughest of physical therapists would offer. It's also very conducive to any stroke Survivor's recovery, even if a Survivor is wheelchair bound. The only thing a person needs is the desire for improvement. But I would caution anyone to consult their doc just to be safe. That said, many docs might be reticent or even dead set against one pushing their self so hard so it would be crucial for the patient to make sure their doc is a more progressive thinker than one who subscribes to obsolete thinking.

This strength training is based on the Super-slow method, where "conventional" thought of strength-building is tossed out the window. It's based on really good science. Contrary to conventional thought, it does not take hours upon hours of reps nor does it require hours upon hours to be spent at the gym. Every session is done with a trainer present to...  ...  more

Well, it's been an interesting time, what with my sensory nervous system finally awakening and other delights. I made it over a major hump in strength training. When first started 1.5 yrs ago I was lucky to get 4 machines done in a session. With my trainer helping to get my slow self between machines faster I can do 8 and I'm shooting for 10. With the weather having warmed up I can walk outside and lately my strength & resulting stability has grown to the point that I can successfully negotiate grassy terrain and minor slopes. Last week I achieved a goal I set over 2 yrs ago, of getting to the top of the blockade outside the driveway to my apt. YES!! :D Bit by bit the Iron Gimp is improving! :)  less

I ran around with my muddy buddy and great sax player the Ronster for awhile, was on my feet a lot. http://www.ronkieper.com Dug some great jazz and blabbed up a storm. I miss playing music with him and Kelly Pipoly, who is a great tenor man here in Coeur d'Alene. There is nothing better than jamming with great players! Maybe one day I'll be back as a bone player. There's been undeniable progress in that area, though it still needs tons and tons of work. But the Iron Gimp is always up to the challenge. Bring it on!  less

This is great because it shows me that the pathways in my sensory nervous system are showing improvement. My hands are also becoming more sensitive to hot water. Nice!! I also was able to play a scale up & down without missing a note, which may very well be due to sensory improvement too, since feeling is all-important to being able to form notes properly on a brass instrument. So I was feeling fatigued a lot, not sleeping well and feeling weaker in general. For weeks. Yup, it was potassium's doing. Underdoing that is. I've always been aware of the need for potassium but I didn't realize just *how* important keeping potassium's minimum up really is, until now. In analyzing my potassium intake over the previous month I found myself lacking from 1000-1500mg daily and it was taking its toll. I was hydrated very nicely but my system most definitely was complaining about it. I've since got my level back into the 5000-6000mg daily range and am back to my old IronGimp self. :)  less
